A governess returned to York, a gentleman who never forgot her, and a Christmas season full of second chances.

After nine years as a governess, Joan Cobb returns to York with her employers, expecting little more than a familiar setting for the Christmas festivities. She has long since learned to put duty before her own wishes, including her fondness for Christopher Holly. But the young clerk she remembers is now an established solicitor—and seeing him again makes it difficult to remember why she ever thought she could forget him.

Christopher Holly is perfectly capable of conducting himself with dignity. Until Joan Cobb appears outside his office window, and he finds himself running into the street without his hat. Years have passed since their friendship first hinted at something more, but his affection for her is anything but a distant memory. With Joan back in York, he has another chance to discover whether she might welcome more than friendship.

Between Christmas gatherings, snowy afternoons, and quiet moments together, Joan begins to glimpse a future she scarcely dares to want. Christopher still makes her laugh, still values her opinions, and seems determined to seek her company whenever he can. Yet Christmas will end, and a governess cannot build her future upon a few weeks of happiness. Will they let circumstances part them again, or find the courage to make this Christmas the beginning of a life together?

Mr. Holly’s Second Chance is a Christmas-themed novella, part of the Gentlemen of York series. It may be enjoyed as a stand-alone or read between Lord Hartwell’s Refuge and Mr. Sterling’s Reckoning. This is a gentle Regency-era romance, suitable for all readers.
